Byte

Byte definition

A "byte" in the context of data usually means 8 bits, also known as an octet. An 8-bit byte thus can represent 256 possible values, such as an integer from 0 to 255. Modern computer systems usually extend in multitudes of bytes, especially doubling them. Although bits are the most basic unit of binary data, a measure of bytes are often used instead (sometimes mistakenly classified) and labelled with a capital "B".
