Computer program

Program (software) definition

A computer program (software) is basically a set of instructions (commands) that a computer follows to process data. Running programs are often known as "processes" or "daemons", however the latter in particular may also refer to an executable (stored program or program file). A complex program or program suite like an operating system (OS) can operate a computer and provide a self-managed system environment for other programs to run, as well as provide a user-friendly interface. Some programs run in the background with no user-interface, providing services to other programs or hardware.

"Software", as a computer component or module, is distinct from "hardware" as it in most respects bares no solid, physical or electronic presence and usually is more easily changed and created. Software depends on hardware to exist and have meaning, however the hardware that commits software needs it for a purpose and to function. Other kinds of software include "services", "drivers" and "libraries".
