CPU

CPU definition

A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a microprocessor chip or module that executes instructions in program (software). The CPU is the key component to any computer system, processing, fetching and outputting data according to a set of commands, both by the software and hardware (static or "hardwired"). A CPU package can contain multiple chips (dies), or embed them onto the same chip (monolith). Such a CPU can also contain different kinds of processors, which is often called a System-On-a-Chip (SoC) and is most often found in phones and other smart devices. SoC's offer efficient use of space and energy, but limit flexibility and performance. A standalone CPU, containing little more than the "cores", can run faster and reduce heat pollution - a biproduct of running especially at high workloads.
