RAM (memory)

RAM definition

RAM (Random Access Memory) is a form of memory (data storage) that allows the contents to be read and written to in any order, with latencies (time) not significantly dependant on difference in address (location) changes between accesses. RAM is also often referred to the system memory, usually a volatile (sustained-power-dependant) storage for running programs. Thus, most "RAM" is known as SDRAM (synchronous, dynamic, random access memory) and modern computers often use DDR (double data rate) interfaces; technically however Solid State Drives (SSD), which are for long-term data storage, are also random-access.
